The Stories We Don't Tell

What do we do with the parts of Scripture that make us uncomfortable? Judges 19 is one of those passages that rarely makes it into a children's Bible story book, and for good reason. It is raw, disturbing, and deeply human. Yet it is in the Bible, and that means it has something to say to us. This message takes us into one of the darkest corners of the Old Testament to confront a story of profound failure, abuse, and neglect. A Levite, a man set apart to represent God's presence and mercy among the people, fails at every turn to protect and honor the woman in his care. Her father, the man who should have fought for her safety, instead prizes social convention over his own daughter's life. What emerges is a powerful portrait of what happens when men abandon their God-given responsibility to love and protect. The spiritual lesson here is not subtle. The villains of this story are not only the violent mob outside the door. They are the men inside the house who had every opportunity to do what was right and chose otherwise. This passage calls us to examine our own hearts and ask whether we are building a world where the vulnerable are shielded, cherished, and seen.
